Can a New Business Beat Older Companies on Google?
Hey,
It's George.
I hear this all the time from business owners.
"We've only been open for six months."
"Our competitors have been around for 15 years."
"We probably don't have a chance of showing up on Google yet."
And honestly?
I can understand why people think that.
If someone's been in business for 15 years, surely Google would trust them more than the new guy down the road.
Sounds reasonable.
Except that's not how it works.
I've seen businesses that were barely old enough to celebrate their first birthday outrank companies that have been around longer than some of their employees.
Which seems a bit strange when you first think about it.
You'd expect Google to reward whoever has been around the longest.
But Google isn't handing out trophies for surviving.
It's trying to answer a question.
When someone searches for a service, Google wants to know:
"Who is the best result for this person right now?"
Not five years ago.
Not ten years ago.
Right now.
And this is where a lot of older businesses get caught.
They built a website years ago.
They haven't updated their Google profile in forever.
Their last review came in sometime around the invention of fire.
Meanwhile, a newer business comes along.
They set up their website properly.
They optimize their Google Business Profile.
They ask customers for reviews.
They stay active.
And little by little, they start climbing.
It's a bit like fitness.
Owning a gym membership for 15 years doesn't automatically make you fit.
The person who started six months ago but actually shows up and trains every day will eventually pass you.
Google works much the same way.
Being older can help.
But it's not the thing that decides who wins.
What matters is who's putting in the work now.
So if your business is new and you've been assuming you're too late...
You're probably giving your competitors way too much credit.
Talk soon,
George
